The puzzle-platformer Max & the Magic Marker headlines this week's downloadable titles. The 1,000 point ($10) title involves finding your way through stages by drawing to overcome obstacles and enemies. The week's only other WiiWare offering is Dracula - Undead Awakening for 1,000 points. The top-down undead shooter was a Mini for the PSP Go, and has now been ported. More on that in a moment. The Virtual Console game this week is Final Fantasy II. Note that this isn't the NES sequel, but rather Final Fantasy IV for Super NES, which was brought to the U.S. as Final...

Shaun White was a major hit during the Olympics, so how does a license holder like Ubisoft capitalize? The obvious answer is "make more snowboarding games," but it seems that the publisher is interested in taking the series in a slightly different direction.
Ubisoft has announced Shaun White Skateboarding, which is slated to launch later this year. White is best-known for his skills as a snowboarding, but as you've probably heard ad nauseum by now, he's quite the skateboarding talent as well. In fact, he's the first athlete to win gold medals in both the Summer and...

Nintendo cut the Wii's price for the first time last year, but don't expect a repeat performance in 2010. Speaking with GamesBeat, Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway seemed content with the console's current standing.
"Certainly on the Wii, we are now in the fifth year. We have had extraordinary success," she said. "The PS2 went on to sell more than 50 million. So that means there is plenty of opportunity to sell more Wiis."
She continued, "That being said, going into the fifth year, you usually don't anticipate selling more than you did in the previous year."
NHL 2K11 will be returning after all, but it won't be on next-generation consoles. Take-Two is ceding that territory to EA this year, instead choosing to focus on the Nintendo Wii (via Joystiq).
Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick was on hand to announce that the franchise's next iteration is a Wii exclusive during the recent earnings report. They aren't abandoning the high-definition consoles though, they're just taking the time to refine their approach.
"As far as NHL, we're taking a year off on PS3 and Xbox 360 to refine, redesign and re-think," Zelnick said.

Electronic Arts has confirmed that a small number of the Boom Blox development team at EA Los Angeles has been laid off after the project they were working on was moved to EA Bright Light Studio.
An EA spokesperson told Kotaku that a "small project has been moved from EA Los Angeles, to the EA Bright Light Studio in Guildford, UK, where the Harry Potter franchise and several of the Hasbro properties are developed." The spokesperson gave no other details about the project, but The Boom Blox team had evidently been working on a game that wasn't for the Wii, and now-former EALA...
It's been a nearly two years since Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden guru Tomonobu Itagaki left Tecmo and sued his former employer. "It's already been two years? I haven't been playing around or anything," he said in an interview printed in this week's edition of Famitsu magazine. "I've been working on new game concepts, taking photographs, building model-train layouts, all sorts of things. I just figured it was about time I got back to games, my main line of work."
The interview, the first he's given to the Japanese game press in two years, gave Itagaki the chance to...

If you want a Wii Classic Controller Pro, but you don't necessarily want to drop the cash for a copy of Monster Hunter Tri, it appears that you're in luck. The newer variant will be retailing separately starting next month.
GameStop has the listing on their official site, and it's currently priced at $19.99. The white variant is the only one listed right now, so it looks like you'll have to spring for the Monster Hunter bundle if you want the black version.
The Classic Controller Pro is currently available in Japan, and one of them has been floating around the office...

As previously reported, today is the start of a month-long release for Mega Man 10. Wii users get first dibs on the anticipated sequel, while PS3 and Xbox 360 users will have to wait a few more weeks. The game is available for 1,000 points ($10). Joining it on WiiWare are Dart Rage for 600 points ($6), and Happy Hammerin for 500 points ($5). Those two are a dart and whack-a-mole game, respectively. Virtual Console makes a return this week with the Neo Geo version of Fatal Fury...

It's coming out in 2010! Not necessarily! Yes it totally is! No, it so totally may not! Nintendo has certainly played with the hopes of fans over the last few months about whether their new Wii Zelda would actually release this year, and now Nintendo of America executive vice president Cammie Dunaway is the latest to very nearly confirm it will.
Speaking to Wired during the Nintendo Media Summit earlier this week, Dunaway seemed to suggest Zelda is indeed scheduled for...

It may not be your own, it may not be your friend's or neighbor's, but somewhere in the world at this very moment a Wii Zapper is shedding a single tear. For it has observed the Ghostbusters-themed Wii proton pack mod-case above, and knows it is so far superior that all Zappers might as well kill themselves in response.
This mod showed up on the Ghostbusters Fan forums (via Engadget), presumably made by image poster "irrelevanttomfoolery." As you can see in the second...

Rumors of a successor to the Nintendo Wii have been flying around for some time now, not the least because last year saw a slight downturn in sales following previous record-breaking years. According to Nintendo's Cammie Dunaway though, the platform's install base still has plenty of room to grow.
Speaking with GameSpot during yesterday's Nintendo Media Summit, Dunaway suggested that gamers shouldn't be holding their breath for the next generation of the Wii, "I...
Families will get a chance to solve mysteries on the Wii later this year when Disney's Guilty Party launches. Dubbed a "mystery party game," the title fuses elements of board games and a whodunit, but clues and logic puzzles shift in each play to offer new experiences. The plot follows the Dickens Detective Agency as they solve crimes set in motion by Mr. Valentine. It offers co-op and competitive gameplay in which players take turns as detectives, using the Wii Remote...
As part of Nintendo's media summit this week, the company had a few upcoming WiiWare games to show, including new entries in the "Art Style" series -- the funky (as in musically), minimalist (as in artistically) games available on both Wii and DSi.
Art Style ROTOZOA: If PixelJunk Eden and flOw had a baby, Rotozoa might be it. As a multi-tentacled organism, your goal is to devour smaller protozoas by touching them with your limbs. The more you eat, the longer your limbs...
It may not be as exciting an announcement as release dates for almost every known first-party Nintendo game under the sun, but Ubisoft had a nice treat all the same: At the Nintendo World conference earlier today, they revealed the Wii version of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will include a free copy of the Super Nintendo version of the original Prince of Persia. On top of that, it'll also distinguish itself from other console versions with co-op...

Ask Nintendo sound composer Koji Kondo what his favorite game-biz memory is, and the answer comes pretty quickly. "A lot of people remember how Paul McCartney invited Shigeru Miyamoto to a concert when he played in Japan," he said in a Famitsu interview this week, "but Miyamoto actually brought me along to that so he could introduce me as the 'Mario music guy.' Paul and his wife Linda responded by singing the melody to me -- 'Oh, the da da dah da da dah dah guy!' I'd...
Nintendo's media summit was held today, and the company dropped dates for several anticipated releases. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is set for May 23, which interestingly means Nintendo isn't aiming for a holiday release. The company also announced Monster Hunter Tri for release on April 20. GameStop will have a free demo disc, and pre-orders will receive 500 Nintendo Points. Meanwhile, Metroid: Other M is set for June 27.
As for WiiWare, Max & the Magic Marker will...
Kouichi Sugiyama is the most well-known game music composer in Japan -- or, at least, the one whose music is listened to by the most people. He's worked on the bestselling Dragon Quest series since its inception in 1986, bringing an orchestral sort of sound to games for the first time and offering a melodical style unique enough that Sugiyama's work is still immediately identifiable from the crowd.
What most Westerners don't know is that Sugiyama was already a...

Holy media blitz, Batman, we have two stories on the caped crusader in one day. Right on the heels of Warner Bros acquisition of Rocksteady, we find that the publisher is looking to also bring out a kinder, friendlier Batman game as well. If Red Steel 2 doesn't win over the hearts (and wallets) of Wii owners when it releases next month, then you probably shouldn't expect a Red Steel 3 anytime soon. Creative director Jason Vandenberghe revealed as much at an event in London last week (via Play.tm).
"It was clear from the beginning we had to succeed. It was absolutely crucial," Vandenberghe explained, continuing, "It was obvious that, if Red Steel 2 came out and it was not well-received by the fans,...
Nintendo offers up plenty of Wii and DS games for this week's downloadable update, but in an unusual move, no new Virtual Console titles have been made available. WiiWare brings us GhostSlayer for 600 points ($6), an action game that uses your Wii remote as the protagonist's sword. Mouse House, also 600 points, is a puzzle game in which the player helps a mouse through a series of traps and mazes. Family Go-Kart Racing for 500 points ($5) stars Billy, Sarah, Daddy and...

In what will surely challenge their own Asteroids for the title of Most Inane Choice for a Videogame Film Adaptation, the LA Times now reports that Atari is currently "in active discussions" with film studios to convince them acquiring Missile Command for a film adaptation is a good idea, too.

Epic Mickey's lovely concept art won it some early buzz, but that excitement was tempered a bit by the appearance of the first screens. Will it move to another platform besides the Wii though?

"That's not to say that we won't go to other platforms [in the future]."

Monolith Soft, and its founder Tetsuya Takahashi, have spent much of the past decade creating epic-scale console RPGs -- Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos, that sort of thing. Even Takahashi has to admit, though, that JRPGs need to adapt to the times a little -- and Xenoblade, which was first announced last E3 under the name Monado: Beginning of the World, is his shot at making amends.
"Most of the RPGs we've created had their main focus on story and cutscenes, but I think that...

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime made a pretty bold prediction back in November. Prior to their respective releases, he said that New Super Mario Bros Wii would outsell the 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by the end of holiday season. He proclaimed, "Absolutely. Many gamers are feeling up to their ears in zombies. The theme of savage undead feasting has appeared in so many games recently that it may be time for developers to step back a bit, but that doesn't mean we can't be impressed when one thinks of a new twist. IGN recently featured an upcoming Wii title from Epicenter games called Rock of the Dead. The game uses your Guitar Hero controller to input the correct riff, which then results in shooting down approaching zombies....
In this week's issue of Famitsu magazine, Marvelous Entertainment took the wraps off World Game Parade, a new publishing label they'll be using to publish indie-developed WiiWare games over in Japan.
"HD games from the West with beautiful graphics and complex controls have gotten a lot of attention from hardcore gamers in Japan," WGP producer Louie Lamar told Famitsu. "But there are lots of fun, casual titles on sale overseas as well. We thought it'd be nice to...
We tend to shy away from announcements of announcements, but sometimes one catches our interest too much to ignore. IGN reports that Nintendo is holding a media summit on February 24 in San Francisco. The latest issue of the Official Nintendo Magazine teased "something very special" for the March issue, leaving many to conclude whatever...

After ages of speculation and rumors, Nintendo has finally confirmed that they're developing a new gaming system... sort of. During this year's Annual Japan Media Arts Festival, beloved game designer Shigeru Miyamoto talked up the projects he's currently working on: the next Legend of Zelda for the Wii, some kind of Motion-Plus-enabled game, and Nintendo's next hardware release (via Andriasang).
The Mario creator didn't get down to specifics on the device, but this is...
Shigeru Miyamoto's hobbies are a well-guarded industry secret at this point, and for good reason: Games like Pikmin, Nintendogs, and Wii Fit all sprung from the day-to-day occurrences in the Mario creator's personal life. But what about the inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy? Has Miyamoto developed a thing for space travel? Might we soon see the legendary Nintendo designer take to the stars like Richard Garriott before him?
Actually, Super Mario Galaxy's existence...
Today's biggest release snuck up on us. After a quiet weekend announcement of Blaster Master: Overdrive, the game has already hit the Nintendo download service. This Sunsoft-produced sequel to the NES classic costs 1,000 points ($10), and seems to hit the right pitch of what made the original game so revered. But, a demo is available if you want to take the old tank for a test drive first. Of course, that isn't the only game on WiiWare this week. Tomena Sanner is a...

There's still very little known about Metroid: Other M, the new installment in the Metroid franchise that's being developed in collaboration between Nintendo and Tecmo's Team Ninja. But in the pages of the latest Famitsu (via Andriasang), Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto explained a bit of what the game's focus will be.

There have been plenty of instances in which we've had to report that a game has been delayed, but not enough where we get to report that one has been moved up. For Phoenix Wright fans though, we bring happy tidings.

High Voltage's Gladiator A.D. has a release date, and a new name. Renamed Tournament of Legends, the 3D fighter will be arriving in May.
The name change might stem from the fact that the gameplay isn't quite so much classic coliseum as a grudge match against Minotaurs, Gorgons and even Valkyries.
Our preview called it an "odd duck of a fighting game," with more in common with Bushido Blade than you might expect.
Namco Bandai Games' Japanese headquarters announced today that Ivy the Kiwi?, a touch pen-based action puzzle game from Yuji Naka's Prope studio, is coming to the Wii and Nintendo DS. Originally released for Windows Mobile platforms last year, Ivy is a puzzler that stars a young kiwi as she navigates...
These two people, along with possibly a few million others, are beside themselves with curiosity at the moment over what the new Wii Legend of Zelda might be like. Lucky for them, then, that series director Eiji Aonuma dropped a few more hints this week in the pages of Famitsu magazine.

A pretty busy week for game reviews in Japan -- here are the highlights from this week's issue of Famitsu magazine:

There have been a lot of mixed signals from Nintendo about whether fans should expect The Legend of Zelda Wii this year: First Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said the game was "not committed" to 2010, then Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said it was releasing in 2010, and then Reggie said on their "Nintendo Week" promotional show that it "had to be perfect" -- the implication being if that means missing 2010, so be it.
And now, apparently, Zelda Wii is...
In what may be the best symbolic example yet of Nintendo's current phase of prosperity, president Satoru Iwata announced that lifetime sales of the Wii have surpassed those of the NES, and the DS has outsold the Game Boy -- making them, respectively, Nintendo's best-selling home hardware of all time and best-selling hardware period (via Shacknews).
"Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home...

Tech bloggers haven't been shy about criticizing the iPad for its price, its feature set, or its thoroughly mockable name. But now Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is commenting on it in a recent New York Times report. "It was a bigger iPod Touch," he said of the device. "There were no surprises for me." His comments could be seen as run-of-the-mill corporate sniping, but his thoughts seem to echo most of the criticisms being levied against the iPad. After heavy...
